Neuropsychological Assessment and
Psychological Testing
You know you, or someone you love, has a need for change. An excellent way to start off is a psychoeducational or neuropsychological evaluation.
Neuropsychological testing gives a snapshot of a person’s health.
Testing helps answer important questions like:
- How good are my memory, attention, and problem-solving skills?
- Do I need work accommodations or a specialized education plan?
On a more global level, testing can help answer questions like can a person:
- Live safely by themselves?
- Successfully go back to work or school?
- Manage their finances or medications safely?
- Drive safely?
Types of Conditions in an Evaluation:
Brain injuries, strokes, dementia, and psychiatric conditions often affect abilities, behavior, and emotions. Many people report symptoms including trouble remembering things, thinking of the right word, running-into-things, concentrating and doing more than one thing at a time (multi-tasking).
Academic and vocational abilities are often affected as well. People may have difficulty spelling, doing simple calculations, and comprehending what they read. Emotional changes may include frustration, depression, and difficulty controlling anger. After a brain injury, you, your doctor, therapists, and family members may want to know exactly how you have been affected.
The Process
You will sit down with me for a 1-2 hour interview. Then, depending on your needs and the referral question, I will do a series of tasks to gauge your current functioning. However, unlike many other neuropsychologists and assessment specialists, I can provide ongoing consultation for retraining the brain both in terms of cognitive functioning and socioemotional functioning.
A truly comprehensive evaluation takes at least 5-6 hours, often more. It can be administered in one day, but often is separated into two or more days, depending on the person.
